Sweeney explains Bruins' decision to trade Marchand to Panthers

Don Sweeney explains how the Bruins came to the decision to trade Brad Marchand
The Boston Bruins traded away their captain and a franchise legend at Friday's NHL trade deadline.
Brad Marchand was dealt to the rival Florida Panthers in exchange for a 2027 conditional second-round draft pick. This pick will become a 2027 or 2028 first-round pick if Florida wins two rounds in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Marchand appears in at least 50 percent of the team’s playoff games. The B's also retained 50 percent of Marchand's salary.
Marchand's departure marks the end of an era for the Bruins. He was the last player remaining from the team that won the 2011 Stanley Cup championship.
The Bruins and Marchand's representatives tried to get an extension done, but the two sides weren't able to work out something before the trade deadline.
The Bruins and Maple Leafs have finally announced the Brandon Carlo trade.
The B's acquired forward Fraser Minten, a 2026 first-round draft pick (top-five protected), and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick (from Philadelphia) from the Leafs in exchange for defenseman Brandon Carlo. Boston also will retain 15 percent of Carlo’s salary.

Don Sweeney discusses the Bruins’ trade deadline moves and explains why it was the right time to make them
The Boston Bruins did a very good job adding to their war chest of draft picks ahead of the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
The deadline came and went at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, and the Bruins ended up making a bunch of deals over the last couple days, trading away Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, Trent Frederic, Justin Brazeau and Brandon Carlo.
Here's a recap of what is coming to the Bruins and what went out the door:
The Bruins ended up acquiring six draft picks (they later traded one of them) between the five trades made, including one first-round pick and three second-round picks. The B's entered the season without a 2025 second-round pick. Now they own 2025 second-round picks from the Carolina Hurricanes (Coyle trade) and St. Louis Blues (Frederic trade).
